Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is a 501 c -3 non-profit organization providing lifetime homes for abandoned, abused and neglected "big cats. With over 450 acres and 130+ exotic cats on-site, the refuge is one of the largest big cat sanctuaries in the United States. The USDA licensed refuge was founded in 1992 and has grown to become one of the Top 10 Attractions in Arkansas and the most popular in Eureka Springs. Lions, cougars, ligers, leopards, tigers, and bears are displayed in large natural habitats that surround the main compound enclosures and gift shop. Each animal has its own story/history plaque for self-guided tours. The popular daily feeding times range from 4 p.m. (winter) to 5 p.m. (summer).Student interns lead guided half-mile walking tours at 11 a.m. daily and trolley tours are available during summer months. Tour topics include refuge operations overview, rescue initiatives and background on all the different species of animals displayed. Tours run every hour from 11 a.m. until one hour before feeding time. Staff and interns conduct 20 minute Weekend Keeper Talks in the main compound area on Saturdays at 10:40 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. and Sundays at 10:40 a.m.The refuge offers on-site lodging in the 5-room Safari Lodge and three other special accommodations. An RV park and camping area features fire circles, reflecting pond, gazebo, and picnic tables. A lighted, outdoor performance stage is also available for the many special events held at the refuge.Open everyday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the refuge is just 7 miles south of historic Eureka Springs, Arkansas on scenic Hwy 23.
